Darul Uloom al Arabiya al Islamiya is an independent residential Islamic college which opened in October 1979.  It has about 370 students on roll, aged 11-23 years.  It offers both secondary secular and further education as well as advanced Islamic education.  It was the first school of its type in the UK.  The 2014 Ofsted inspection report found it outstanding in all respects.

The Ordnance Survey map of 1850 shows a “Lower Hey House” where the college is now.  This was also known as Holcombe Hall or Haymount.  There is a picture of this very imposing mansion here .  It was owned by the Aitken family and from about 1908 it became the Aitken Sanitorium where patients with tuberculosis could recuperate in the country air.

An account of the transition from sanitorium to college can be found here.
